How to build a “good” DWDM system?

Creating good telecommunications networks means taking care of the quality and correctness of the built solutions.
Our experts have many years of experience in designing and building DWDM systems, including those that at first glance seem impossible to implement in the budget and with the expected functionality.

In a richly equipped network laboratory, we are able to carry out orders requiring complex conditions, therefore we can guarantee that the results of the work will fully meet the assumptions and expectations of customers.

Our client - one of the most modern data centers in Poland, entrusted us Building a DWDM system enabling the connection of two data centres. The optical routes made available to us formed two single fibers o length about 100~120km. So the task would seem simple - to build a good DWDM system.

We started working on the project by understanding what the word “good” means to the client. It quickly became clear that in the budget provided for the task it would not be easy to include everything that was hidden for the client under the word “good”. The initial calculation, which included all the expectations of the client, exceeded the budget by almost 3 times...

It was the moment that we like the most in Salumanus. Our experts have many years of experience in designing and building DWDM systems, including those that at first glance seem impossible to implement in the budget and with the expected functionality. It turned out that the first significant limitation, very important from the point of view of Cost of OPEX, was the fact that on each route we had only 1 optical fiber. This has caused the number of available opportunities to shrink significantly.

In addition, the amount of traffic to be sent made the challenge even more interesting. After a few brainstorms... we had an idea. From idea to implementation, the road leads through our fiber optic laboratory, where we have pre-verified our idea and proceeded to complete the necessary equipment.

At Salumanus, we put a lot of emphasis on ensuring that the solutions that come out of our hands work exactly as designed. That is why, after completing the equipment, we were able to fully exploit the capabilities of our laboratory and recreate a fully functional customer network in it.

The network we built for the customer allows transmission between two data centers 24x 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 24x 16G Fibre Channel and 16x 1 Gigabit Ethernet, while meeting the assumption that the latency between client devices will be less than 1ms, which is crucial from the point of view of synchronous replication.

The solution used not only fully met the needs of the customer, but also provided a stable, trouble-free and therefore more efficient connection, not exceeding the planned investment budget.
