Paving the way for optical network innovations
On October 23, 2024, representatives from Europe’s largest telecom companies will gather at Novotel Warsaw Centrum Warsaw for the 17th edition of Dni Światła, an annual conference organised by telecommunication networks specialist Salumanus. Inspired by the spirit of mountaineering, this year’s conference draws a parallel between the challenges of scaling peaks to the advancements in optical networks.
The event’s highlight will be a panel discussion titled ’Open optical networks: A revolution in costs and management, or a new deal for providers? ’featuring experts from Netia, Exatel, and Polskie Otwarty Światłowodu. Moderated by Łukasz Dec, founder of Telko.in, the discussion will explore how open standards and interfaces can drive greater interoperability between devices from different manufacturers.
Open networks are crucial in the telecommunications industry as they enable a shift away from proprietary, vendor-specific systems, which have traditionally locked operators into expensive, single-source supply chains.
By embracing open standards, telecom providers can diversify their suppliers, reduce dependency on specific vendors and more easily adapt to new technologies. This flexibility lowers operating expenses and fosters a competitive ecosystem where innovation can thrive, benefiting both operators and end-users with improved services and cost efficiency.
"The telecom industry is at a pivotal moment, with the demand for higher bandwidth and more efficient network management constantly increasing," said Marcin Bala, CEO of Salumanus. "Open networks, along with coherent modulation and wave multiplexing systems, offer significant potential for optimisation and cost reduction.
“Nevertheless, we must also acknowledge the significant challenges that come with such a large systemic change. That's why we have chosen to engage in discussions within our market, bringing together representatives from major operators at this year’s Dni Światła,” concluded Bala.
In addition to the panel, the conference will feature in-depth sessions on key technologies, including IP-over-DWDM systems, alien lambda technology, and universal optical modules. The main conference partner DCN Europe will lead a special talk on Wi-Fi and LAN transformations in the hospitality and healthcare sectors.
This year’s event will also address the challenges and opportunities surrounding future optical transmission technologies, with a special session on the advancements of 1.6T, 3.2T, and 6.4T modules. Experts will dispel myths and explore practical applications of these innovations as operators look to scale their networks.
